Landscape Display Mode

Hello,

We are running esx 5.1.3 hardware version 9 with updated tools and using the VMware SVGA 3D driver on Windows 7.

Can someone tell me if its possible to use dual monitors in vertical/landscape mode?

The resolution we're trying to set is 1050 x 1680

With a physical machine there is an option to rotate the display in the Windows 7 display settings but that option isn't available with a VM.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Vsphere 5.5 Vcentre Gone Down on VMFS Volume

Hi

We had had a working 4 Node VMware VSphere set up but this morning the VMFS\Datastore [SAN Hosted] has filled up

It had, amongst other things, the Virtual Centre Appliance but thats now gone down

We cant access VSphere

error when trying to power it up - "there is  no space left on the device"

I have used the VSphere Client to coonnect directly to my hosts and can see that there is 0 space left on the datastore

I have also putty'd to my host and done a  df-h to confirm this

My questions

- When I delete or remove things from the said datastore - it does not free up space it still shows 0% even after a refresh

- How can i expand it or address this? It IS SAN hosted but we cant access the SAN Interface yet [resource requested]

Any other options I have?

Any help greatly appreciated

ISCSI configuration

Hello everyone,

I write to ask you some information about the ISCSI binding configuration. Exactly I have two host ESXi with one 10 Gbit network card each and one storage ISCSI with four IP adrress; this is an example of the configuration:

host 1:

IP address : 10.10.10.2 --> two socket in bonding conneted at two switch in stack

host 2 :

IP address : 10.10.10.3 -->two socket in bonding conneted at two switch in stack

Now, I tested the multipath redundancy changing the owner path on the storage , and all works correctly; but I have one doubs releted to the configuration of the ISCSI binding... I have to configure necessarily the ISCSI binding with two ip address for each network card or this configuration is fine anyway?

Thanks,

Woz

vMotion fails at 67%, storage vMotion fails at 82%

Hi all,

I have a problem with failing vmotion or storage vmotion for some VMs in an vSphere 5.1 (build 1065491). In both cases I get the following error: "A general system error occurred: The source detected that the destination failed to resume".

I've been browsing through the KB and among other I found these who are almost identical with my problem:

     - VMware KB: vMotion fails at 82% with the error: General system error occurred: Source detected that destination fail…  - but this is not exactly my case since VT is enabled on all hosts and there was no recent firmware upgrade.

     - VMware KB: vMotion fails at 82% with the hostd log error: Source detected that destination failed to resume  - also does not apply since the VM does not need upgrade nor the UUIDs for the datastores are different on the hosts.

     - VMware KB: vMotion fails at 82% with the error: General system error occured - Failed to resume - VMSafe filter are not present

     - VMware KB: Performing vMotion fails at 78% with the error: Could not open change tracking file - ctk files are not present.

PXE, tftp, http performance

Hi, all.

I have a 2011 iMac (4-core i5 2.5 GHz, 32 GB RAM) running VMware Fusion. In Fusion, I run ESXi 5, with many VMs running in ESX; back-end storage for ESX is provided by a Synology DS415+ NAS powered by 3x WD Red drives, serving files to ESXi over NFS.  The VAAI VIB is loaded into ESXi 5. I have also configured my Synology as a PXE server for my network.

I have noticed that it seems to be very slow in one particular use case, and I'm not sure why that is. I'm hoping others here can help me work through this.

When I build VMs in ESX with an ISO directly attached to the VM, guest builds happen as quickly as one would expect. Those ISOs are stored on the NAS as well, shared to ESX via a separate NFS share.

On the other hand, PXE booting from the DS415+ is the use case that I find to be extremely slow. The problem seems to be that the VM needs an inordinate amount of time to download the images from the NAS: it takes many times as long (say, 10-100 times) to do a PXE install that it does to do an ISO install. It doesn't matter if I use HTTP or TFTP to get the PXE boot images from the NAS, it's always slow.

By 10-100 times, I mean this: booting ESXi 5 takes a matter of seconds when it is booted with an attached ISO. When I boot ESXi 5 via PXE, it takes upwards of an hour. When I use a browser to hit my Synology to download the largest file in the ESXi 5 bootup (tools.t00), it takes only a few seconds to download.

Is there some trick to getting performance out of a PXE install in this type of setup? Is this an ESX misconfiguration? Is it a Synology misconfiguration? I don't think I'm overloading my NAS, because DSM's Resource Monitor shows very little utilization of CPU/Memory/Disk/Network.

Thanks.

Can I add HBA interface in guest virtual machine (Centos 6) so that OS can see directly drive unit of my tape library, which is connected to my SAN, and to write data to fiber channel.

Vmware host is blade server which is linked to FC.

Does it Vmware layer to permit to guest OS to see directly HBA interface ?

Please help: can't find Principal in an LDAP domain in PowerCLI scripts

Hi,

We're using vSphere 5.5.   Currently vSphere users are on LDAP. User permission is assigned in the form of CUHK\username, where CUHK is the domain that queries backend LDAP. It works fine in vSphere web interface and vSphere client.

However, in vSphere PowerCLI, user is not found most vSphere PowerCLI commands that requires Principal. e.g.

I tried the method mentioned in the community post before but got error of New-VIAccount not found:

Intel X520-2 10G NIC Teaming

Dear Experts,

We are running an ESXi 5.5.0 (2068190) Host and currently have 4 x "Broadcom BCM5716C NetXtreme II GigE NICs". These have been assinged to the same vSwitch0 where all of my VMs reside.

We have purchased 2 x "Intel Ethernet Server Adapter X520-2" 10G NICs and would like to set theseup (preferrably as a team) in order that our VMs become 10G networking. How best do we do this? Is it a simple matter of assiging both NICs to my vSwitch 0 and then removing the other 4 x vmnics?

Many thanks for your feedback.

Regards, Oliver

Host in maintainance mode extended period

$

One of the Clusters I have inherited has had a host in maintenance mode for 6 months. I was told it was that to ensure there was some capacity available in case a lot of vms suddenly needed creating. The vcenter and hosts are esxi 5.5 Update2. The cluster is healthy except for a warning on the Cluster about a failed HA event awhile back during a network other when the hosts got confused. I read that warning only go away if turn HA on and off and it is cosmetic. Is it?

my actual question though is if it's safe to exit maintenance mode after such a long time?

Can't connect Host to client ESXi 5.5

$

I did an update last night that just showed up in my update manager.

I followed the usual steps, migrated all VM's, maintenance mode, stage, remediation...

Looks like the updates installed fine, but on reboot it never reconnected.

I can get to the host directly through the local client, and everything looks fine.

When I log in through the VSphere server the host refuses to connect.

Cannot contact the specified host (xxxx.xxxxx.com). The host may not be available...

Call "Datacenter.QueryConnectionInfo "for object "xxxxx" on vCenter Server "xxxx.xxxxx.com" failed.

I've update the client and server, figuring that could be the problem.  No luck.

I've done these updates 100+ times, and never experienced anything like this before.  Appears to have lost communication VSphere Server as near as I can tell.

Client 3237766

Server 1945274

The host version is a little odd.  The one that isn't update is 3116895, and the other is 3248547, but when I log in through Vcenter server it reports 3116895 as the build for both hosts.  I am guessing it simply stores the last build info because it's not actually connecting.

I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting.  Was going to try removing all together, but got a little nervous that I'd have to reconfigure the whole thing.  Seeing as how it was disconnected anyway, I did try adding it back as a new host unsuccessfully.  Same set of errors.

I'm at a loss.

I would think it would be something fairly simple considering it seems to be working fine when I connect directly through the client.  I've also been in the console and nothing looks out of sorts.

hello

I want to get some suggestions form you guys.

I cant take a snapshot of a vm and having this error " cannot creae snapshot because file or folder unspecified filename already exists"

snapshot manager is not showing any snapsot in virtual center but vm folder is having snapshot files.

so when i match all the vmdk's with all the descriptor files i found vm1_1-000002-delta.vmdk is not having a descriptor file.

what is the best to fix it. according to the KB i can rename it to vm1_1-000002-delta.vmdk.old but is it possible to change it on powered on status.

This vm is very important VM and we dont have a backup so any other possible way to backup instead of shutdown and copy the full folder.

What is the best way to fix it.

LACP support for NIC teaming?

The 2 NICs will be plugged into a D-Link DGS-1510-52X switch which supports LACP for port trunking (D-Link calls this link aggregation). Does VMware support LACP so that we can setup a trunk between the 2 NICs within the VMware host and the 2 ports on the D-Link switch. How best do we set this up?

Many thanks for your feedback.

Unmount Datastore and Delete or Unmount and Detach?

$

We are using vsphere 5.5. I have a datastore that I need to remove from vsphere and the SAN and I plan to recreate this same lun as a different RAID and present back to vsphere as a datastore. Question is do I unmount the datastore and then DELETE the datastore or DETACH before I then unpresent from hosts on SAN side and delete this lun on the SAN side and recreate it?

example: 1TB datastore called Datastore1 in vsphere and on SAN side it's volume 010, 1 TB. I am removing this datastore from vsphere then deleting the volume from SAN. This adds the capacity back to the SAN where I plan to create a new 1TB volume as RAID5 then present to vsphere with a new datastore name.

I know when I've unmounted then detached in vsphere, blew the lun away on SAN then recreated it and presented to vsphere, I had to then go in to the hosts and ATTACH. Somehow vsphere saw this lun as being the same as it still contained the same naa ID). To avoid having to re-attach should I just delete the datastore on vsphere (after unmouting) rather than detaching?

thanks!

Call "UserDirectory.RetrieveUserGroups" for object "ha-user-directory" on ESXi "ipaddress here" failed"

Hi,

I currently have a free license of ESXI 5.5.0, 3029944. I can join the server to the domain following  these steeps

  1. Configuration
  2. Authentication services
  3. properties,
    1. change select Directory Service type to Active Directory and enter domain name in the Domain field
    2. Enter username and password of user with permissions to domain join systems.

I am then able to add users and groups from Active Directory.

A day or two later I'll get an error message of "A general error occurred" when logging in to vSphere with a domain joined account that has permissions on the server. The first time it happened

I removed the server from the domain and re-joined it following the above steps and re-added the accounts and was working fine again. It then happened again only this time when I went to add the accounts again in the permissions tab after selecting my domain I get the "Call "UserDirectory.RetrieveUserGroups" for object "ha-user-directory" on ESXi "ipaddress here" failed"" error message.

I left it for a little while and was able to add the accounts I wanted with ease. Is there something I need to change to stop this error?

Thanks

I have some virtual machines running in my Esxi host. Recently i noticed that Vmware tools iso files are missing.

I can attach iso files in CD/DVD drive. But i would like to add these files into Esxi folder, where it is actually mean to reside.

I have sshd to the folders concerning but while listing the folder files it shows"Input/Output" error with the name of the folder.

The folder in red is the one i am interested.

Is there any possible way to get it back online without reinstalling Esxi host or any other means without loosing my Virtual Machines and their Snapshots.

Thanks.
